Abhishek said no to Raavan’s Tamil version

Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan, says he opted out of director Mani Ratnam’s Tamil version of Raavan, where he was originally slated to play the role of Dev, due to language problems.
"When Mani decided to make Raavan it was only in Hindi. The idea of Tamil version came in later. He told me to swap roles from Beera in Hindi to Dev in Tamil. Even though I agreed initially, I realised that I would not be able to do justice to the role since I am not comfortable with the language," said Abhishek.
"I told Mani that I did not want to do a film in a language which I did not understand. It is important for an actor know the language… Aishwarya is in both the versions because she knows it," he said.
"Even though Mani was adamant, I managed to convince him that I would not be able to do the best job," the actor said.
Moreover, I had my hands full with ’Beera’ which was a tough character to play, the actor said.
Southern actor Prithviraj now plays Dev’s character in the Tamil version and superstar Vikram essays Raavan.
Abhishek clarified that Raavan had no connection with the mythological epic ’Ramayan’.
"It would be futile to unnecessarily draw parallels because the only connection is the name Raavan. It is an apt title for the film because of the different shades of Beera’s personality," he said.
"In fact, Beera’s pet name is ’Raavan’. He has a small sister who calls him by that name," the actor revealed.
He said when he told Mani that comparisons to Ramayan would be inevitable due to the film’s title, the director asked him to name one film in India which does not have an influence of epics and mythological stories.
"Also, it is a contemporary film with no reference to naxalism or any naxal leader," he added.

A town where the word of law is not the police but Beera, a tribal who has, over the years, shifted the power equation of the place from the ruling to the have-nots of the area. Dev knows that the key to bringing order to any place is to vanquish the big fish; in this case – Beera. In one stroke Dev manages to rip open Beera’s word, and set in motion a chain of events which will claim lives, change fortunes.
Beera injured but engaged hits back starting a battle that draws Dev, Beera and Ragini into the jungle. The jungle which is dense, confusing, scary. And in this journey they must confront their own truth. A journey which will test their beliefs, convictions and emotions. Emotions which are as scary and confusing as the forest. The forest becomes the battleground. The battle between good and evil, between Dev and Beera, Between Ram and Raavan. But when the lines dividing good and evil are blurring fast whose side will you take. When hate turns to love and the good starts looking evil which side will you battle for? Abhishek all set for TV debut
Launch date of game show yet to be announced
Dressed in a bright yellow coat over a pale yellow shirt and white trousers, Abhishek Bachchan sports a metrosexual look for his debut TV show "National Bingo Night" to be aired on Colors.
Apart from that, the actor sports a baby pink jacket for the promotional photo shoot for the show.
However, this isn't the first time Abhishek is flaunting the metrosexual look - he made similar style statements in movies like "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" and "Dostana".
He is extremely excited about the show, being produced by Fox Television Studios India Pvt. Ltd.
"It's a fun-filled show where the whole country will be my guest without applying any brains or answer any difficult questions. This is such a chilled out concept and something that has never been done before in India. The sheer simplicity of the idea and the fact that this show is highly interactive is what attracted me to it," Abhishek said in a press statement.
The game show will have two fast-paced rounds of the popular guessing game 'Bingo'.
The formal launch of the show was preceded by a flurry of marketing activity including teasers on the channel. For the past few weeks, viewers could see glimpses of Abhishek reclining on a chair or dozing in a cosy bed in promos announcing the launch of his 'Aaram Classes'.
"The idea here is that it's a show which is to be enjoyed by relaxing. That's why we came up with the concept of Aaram Classes... we want people to chill out and play this game. There's no stress, no tension involved at all. So tune in to learn 'aaram' and get ready for Bingo," said Abhishek.
The launch date of the show has yet to be announced.
The format of the show is owned by 20th Fox Television Distribution and it has run successfully in the US, Australia and Philippines.
